How do I find the real name of my dead great-grandfather?
My great-grandfather entered the U.S. under a false name almost 100 years ago and continued to use that false name for the rest of his life. (He died approximately 50 years ago, so do not bother trying to have him deported.) How can I learn what his real name was?
If he came through Ellis Island, try looking him up under the false name. (www.ellisisland.org) You will be able to see what ship he arrived on. Once you know the ship, you can find out the ports of departure (sometimes this is right in the record). I don’t know if he lied about his town and country of origin, or not, but one will be listed. That might help you at least track down where he came from. There would also be a name listed of the person sponsoring him (a U.S. citizen) and their relationship to him. If it is a family member, it could provide you with a last name – especially male relatives. Now, if it was a brother, for example, you could track down the history of the brother through records, and may stumble upon a sibling that seems to dissappear. This would be your g-grandfather, most likely. Lots of if’s involved, but there are ways to at least try if you are willing to do a little extra work. No guarantees, of course. Also, if you have access to county records where he was married, or where he died, you can look to those for names of parents, relations, next of kin, etc. that might help.
Also, if you look up census records (they are available up to 1930), a country of birth, along with the birth country of his parents will be listed. This may not help you get to his real name, but may get you going in the right direction.
