Follicle-stimulating hormones (FSHs) and luteinizing hormones (LH) are technically deemed gonadotropins due to the stimulation of gonads; testes in males and ovaries in females. These are not essential for sustaining life but are necessary for reproduction.Â Since there are two parts to this process there are two different sides of the coin. These particular hormones secrete from the pituitary gland in cells known as gonadotrophs.Â A majority of these gonadotrophs secrete only FSH or LH but it’s not impossible for them to secrete both.

LH enhances production of sex steroids in both men and women from the gonads. LH attaches to receptors known as Leydig cells in the male testes and stimulates the secretion of testosterone. The ovaries react to LH stimulation through the use of Theca cells and secrete testosterone which is then transferred into estrogen by granulosa cells.

Mature follicles in females that produce ovulation are initiated by a rupture of LH secretion that is termed preovulatory LH surge. The ovulated follicles form a corpora lutea secrete the steroid hormones known as progesterone and estradiol. Progesterone is essential to become pregnant and LH is required to support the development and action of the corpora lutea. This is where the term luteinizing hormone describes the induction of luteinization of the ovarian follicle.

Understanding LH leads to the realization that FSH is nothing more than a stimulating affect of ovarian follicles. When the ovaries are introduced it creates what is known as superovulation and forms an abundance of mature follicles to increase the number of mature gametes. FSH is also a vital part in sperm production and helps the workings of Sertoli cells that support the elements of sperm development. So in other words, testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) are required to obtain your full reproductive potential.

This process of stimulation and development is a key element for what is needed to create reproduction in just about any mammal. Making this balance complete can be what is needed to create life when there is no chance for life. Many men and women who are trying to conceive will often go through this process of regulating the LH and FSH levels that are needed to make this process complete.
